What has to stay, and what can change?
I follow that question through character design, memory, learning, human interaction and the control of a system that changes over time. Current research supplies methods and results; the engineering argument asks what each one can support, where it fails, and what a useful comparison would have to test.
The book separates the character described in a prompt, the behavior observed in a system and the continuity experienced by a person. Those questions sometimes meet, but they need different evidence.
